Predator Free Wellington is creating the world’s first predator free capital city where native species and communities can thrive 🙌🏽🦜🦎💚 In the last few months, Predator Free Wellington celebrated eliminating all rats, stoats, weasels and possums from Miramar peninsula, and is now working towards Phase 2, which covers an area from Island bay to the CBD. Introduced pests kill an estimated 25 million native birds a year in New Zealand. With the help of local networks of dedicated trappers, and with the “halo effect” from Wellington’s Zealandia Ecosanctuary - a 2023 Wellington regional council report shows that since 2011, the average number of native bird species in the city’s parks and reserves had risen by 41%. Between 2011 and 2022, kākā increased by 260%, kererū by 200%, tūī by 85% and pīwakawaka by 49%. Kiwi have also been re-introduced to the area and continue to thrive.
